From the Principal

I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful fall weekend. Nature is certainly showing her beautiful colors!

This week we launched our Collections Case. Students can show their collections for two weeks in the front gallery. All they need to do is fill out a little slip (located on the case) and bring it to Mrs. Cadle in the office. It’s a wonderful way to share what we love. This week we are featuring Mrs. Decoteau’s (2nd grade) amazing postcard collection, Hayden in Mrs. Gorse’s class’ sport card collection, and my heart rock collection! We will feature practically anything!

Last Thursday the Principal’s across the district presented our School Improvement Plans. The Cutler School Council works collaboratively with the principal on this important working document that outlines the professional work of the school each year. This year the elementary schools shared two goals, while we had one individual Cutler Goal. Our shared goals included first, focusing on the implementation of our new reading and writing curriculum, CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts). This program is being implemented from K-5 and included a skills portion (Phonics, phonemic awareness, word study, morphology) as well as a knowledge portion which is focused on developing deeper comprehension through access to appropriate texts which expand schema and background knowledge for students and deepen their skills for closely reading and comprehending texts.  You will continue to receive information about this curriculum from classroom teachers.

Our second shared goal is focused on the District work around Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging. We have a District committee convened to lead this work across all schools, and we have Cutler representation. These representatives continue to lead meaningful conversations and Professional Learning at the building level.

Our Cutler specific goal is focused on my Entry Plan. As I have met with members of Central Office, each staff member, parents and caregivers as well as students, I have asked the same questions: What do you love about Cutler? What are the opportunities that exist? What are the challenges? What are your expectations of me as the principal?  I welcome any thoughtful emails that you would like to share, and have enjoyed listening sessions as well as individual conversations around these questions. I will be synthesizing my findings and presenting them to our Superintendent, Staff and Families. These findings will support future goals and meaningful work for our school moving forward.

Lastly, I am so grateful to work with such a generous community. The School Committee has approved two Friends of Cutler donations which will support us purchasing a portable sound system, as well as acquiring new playground equipment.  Both of these purchases are in process and we are excited to get our hands on both! Thank you for your incredible support of our school!

Teal Pumpkin Season Returns!

Many Halloween treats contain milk, eggs, nuts, soy, wheat, or sesame and aren’t safe for children with those food allergies. Each year, the Teal Pumpkin Project® raises awareness of food allergies and creates a safer, more inclusive Halloween for all trick-or-treaters by making non-food treats available in addition to candy. Adding your address to the Teal Pumpkin Project Map and placing a teal pumpkin on your doorstep signals to trick-or-treaters that you participate in the Project by offering non-food treats in a separate bowl. You can now add your Teal Pumpkin events to the map as well, from Trunk or Treats to community parties!

CVS Pharmacy® is partnering with FARE to help support the food allergy community and will have Teal Pumpkin Project-approved, non-food trinkets at approximately 4,000 locations and on CVS.com. And, as always, Teal Pumpkin Project resources and downloadables for all your Halloween needs are available on our Teal Pumpkin Project headquarters. Happy hauntings!

**Due to the continued labor shortage, we have been unsuccessful in our attempts to

secure enough transportation to restore this program to its pre-covid size. We are disappointed we will be unable to offer this program to the middle school this year. We
