Placement for 2022-2023 School Year

Dear Parents,                                                                                April 2022

Each spring we begin to think about the placement of students for next fall.

This process is complex and takes into consideration a number of factors.

Classroom teachers and I will soon begin to discuss the academic and

social/emotional progress of students and how this affects their placement

for next year.  Your child’s teacher has a wealth of knowledge about each

student.  Consultation with the specialists gives us more information about

your child and how s/he interacts in different instructional settings. We seek

to create balanced groupings at each grade level. All of us recognize this

complex process as an important part of our professional responsibility

to your children.

If you would like to offer your thoughts about your child’s placement with

us, please respond in writing to the questions below and submit your response

by May 13 to your child’s teacher. This information will be helpful to us as

we work to create classes that best match your child’s learning style and

personality. We ask that you refrain from requesting a specific teacher by

name especially because our teacher assignments for next year are not yet

final. Please understand that the entire placement team will view the

information you share.

We recognize that the partnership between home and school is vital to your

child’s educational success. Your continued support makes our school an

exciting and enriching learning environment. If you have any questions, please

feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Butler & Ed Kaufman

  1. What are your child’s greatest areas of success in school?

  2. What are your child’s greatest challenges in school?

  3. What does your child like most about coming to school?

  4. How would you describe your child’s learning style?

  5. What type of learning environment would provide your child with the best opportunity for success?

  6. Is there anything else that you would like us to know about your child?

Pick up and Parking

Once again we ask that you be mindful that dismissal can be an extremely busy time in the Cutler parking lot. Our mission is to make sure that your children are loaded into their cars safely. Sometimes this can take a little time. At the moment we have ONE moving pick-up line, alongside the playground,  in operation. Cutler staff members load four cars, and then, once filled, release them to load the next four cars. We would be most grateful if you would plan your pick up in good time so that we can avoid parents and caregivers parking on Asbury Street or the parking lot parallel to Asbury Street and walking over to collect their children, as well as cars pulling out and around stationary cars that we are still loading.

Elementary Literacy Update

Elementary teachers have continued to use professional development time this winter to deepen their understanding of reading instruction. Teachers and administrators have felt that a consistent scope and sequence to follow has been missing, and in response to this, we applied for the Accelerating Literacy Grant from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in early January. The purpose of this competitive grant is to bring high-quality core instructional materials needed to accelerate literacy learning into schools. Last week, our district was awarded funding up to $159,260 to purchase literacy core instructional materials for grades K-5. Using the parameters of the grant, our curriculum team narrowed down the options to two programs which we are looking at closely this month. Over twenty teachers have volunteered to pilot our choices of materials, participate in training for the programs, and rate the programs in order to determine which materials will best fit our needs.

Transportation Satisfaction Survey:

If your student rides the bus, please take a minute to fill out a short satisfaction survey linked HERE. We understand that the driver shortage caused delays for many of you this year, but we are hoping to gain a better understanding of parents' overall satisfaction.

Custodians needed:

We are currently in need of several building custodians, mostly on the night shift. If you know of anyone who may be looking for a first or second job at night, please have them email our Director of Maintenance and Operations, Tom Geary at t.geary@hwschools.net
