Upcoming Important Dates:

Monday, May 31st                                        Memorial Day Holiday, No School

Wednesday, June 16th                                Last Day of School (170 days)

School Store is back!
Students will have an opportunity to shop from our school store (on a cart) this Friday, May 28. School store is a chance for students to buy pencils, erasers, and all things small and fun. Please send your child in with no more than $3 in small bills and coins. Students who do not have funds on Friday will be given a voucher to buy a small item, so all students may enjoy the one opportunity to visit the school store this year. The store will be on a cart and will visit classrooms via their exterior doors Friday morning, so the store will come to them, no need to look for it at arrival. Thank you to Nancy Waddell for overseeing the store and bringing it to students this year!

Fifth Grade Information
Our fifth graders are preparing for their next steps beyond Cutler School. There will be a parent webinar with Craig Hovey, Principal of MRMS, on Tuesday, May 25th at 7pm. 5th-grade families will receive the link directly from MRMS. 5th Graders will visit MRMS on Tuesday, June 8th. Fifth-grade week activities are being planned and we are thrilled to announce that a modified version of our Fifth Grade Leadership Day will be planned for Friday, June 11.

Health Office News

Please remember to check your child for ticks after outdoor activities. Ticks can transmit Lyme and other diseases. Information on Lyme disease can be found here on the CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/lyme/

Avoid Direct Contact with Ticks
Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter.
• Walk in the center of trails.
Repel Ticks on Skin and Clothing
• Use repellent that contains 20 percent or more DEET, picaridin, or IR3535 on exposed skin for protection that lasts several hours.
o Always follow product instructions. Parents should apply this product to their children, avoiding hands, eyes, and mouth.
• Use products that contain permethrin on clothing. Treat clothing and gear, such as boots, pants, socks and tents with products containing 0.5% permethrin. It remains protective through several washings. Pretreated clothing is available and may be protective longer.
• The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has an online tool to help you select the repellent that is best for you and your family.
Find and Remove Ticks from Your Body
• Bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors (preferably within 2 hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that are crawling on you.
• Conduct a full-body tick check using a hand-held or full-length mirror to view all parts of your body upon return from tick-infested areas. Parents should check their children for ticks under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees, between the legs, around the waist, and especially in their hair.
Examine gear and pets
Ticks can ride into the home on clothing and pets, then attach to a person later, so carefully examine pets, coats, and day packs.
• Tumble dry clothes in a dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks on dry clothing  If the clothes are damp, additional time may be needed.

Placement for 2021-2022 School Year
Dear Families,

Each spring we begin to think about the placement of students for next fall. This process is complex and takes into consideration a number of factors. Your child’s teacher(s) has a wealth of knowledge about each student.  Consultation with the specialists gives us more information about your child and how s/he interacts in different instructional settings. We seek
to create balanced groupings at each grade level. All of us recognize this complex process as an important part of our professional responsibility to your children.

If you would like to offer your thoughts about your child’s placement with us, please respond in writing to the questions below and submit your response by May 12th  to your child’s teacher. This information will be helpful to us as we work to create classes that best match your child’s learning style and personality. We ask that you refrain from requesting a specific teacher by
name especially because our teacher assignments for next year are not yet final. Please understand that the entire placement team will view the information you share.

We recognize that the partnership between home and school is vital to your child’s educational success. Your continued support makes our school an exciting and enriching learning environment. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Clifford

Feelings Friday
Some of our fifth graders continue to lead our Feelings Friday whole school announcements. Last week Remy King reiterated once again that all feelings are OK, it’s how we manage them that is important.  She then introduced another strategy we might use when facing uncomfortable feelings- mindful breathing.  Lauren Spong then explained a little bit about what mindfulness is and how it helps us clear our minds and focus on the present moment.  Lauren let everyone know that mindful breathing can help us calm our bodies and mind.  Finally, Henry Waddell led the entire school through a simple mindful breathing exercise.  This week they will be sharing additional mindful breathing activities with students.
I encourage you to continue this discussion about mindfulness and our previous week’s discussion about positive self-talk with your children at home.  In case you missed last week’s News to Use, below are some links for a list of positive affirmations as well as some you might consider printing and putting in your child’s lunch box.

As always, I am available by email or phone for any questions or concerns you might have.

Warmly,
Ann Creilson

Counselor's Corner
Meaningful May
Being a part of something bigger than ourselves and focusing on things that we value is key to our wellbeing. I wanted to share this printable Meaningful May Calendar that encourages us to take time to reflect on what we care about this month.  At Cutler, one of the things we truly care about is helping others.  With that, we have partnered with Miles River 8th grade student and Project 351 leader, Aiden Holloran to collect new and lightly used clothing for Cradles to Crayons.  Our fifth graders will be taking the lead with this and explaining to all of our students what the mission of Cradles to Crayons is as well as how all of us can help.  There is a drop box in the gallery now, thank you in advance for any items you are able to donate!

Feelings Friday
Last week during our Feelings Friday whole school announcement, two of our fifth graders, Quinn Daly and Henry Waddell, reiterated that all feelings are OK, it’s how you manage them that is important.  They went on to explain that our thoughts can be a very powerful tool in increasing our ability to manage uncomfortable emotions and overcome challenges.  The idea is that by changing your thinking, you can better control your emotions and your actions.  Positive thinking skills often start with positive self-talk, which means using the voice in your head to say positive thoughts about yourself or a situation.  Another word for this is positive affirmations and could be something like Henry shared, “I am proud myself” or “I can do this.”  He also encouraged students to think of kind things they might say to themselves and in case anyone had a difficult time coming up with ideas, lists of possible positive affirmations were passed out to classrooms.  I encourage you to continue this discussion with your children at home and have included links for a list of positive affirmations as well as some you might consider printing and putting in your child’s lunch box.
