Thank you for your help!

A big thank you to everyone that picks their child up at the end of the day for hearing our plea for greater care around our dismissal routine.  We greatly appreciate your making the effort to stay in the moving line rather than parking and getting out of the car to collect your children. The average amount of time from the start of loading cars until we load the last car is eleven minutes. We are sure that our efforts to tighten things up have not just made this a safer routine, but also a speedier routine.

Last Day of School

We have received a number of inquiries about the last day of school. As of right now, the last day of school is Wednesday, June 22, 2022. Please remember, at this time, this may not be the actual last day of school. Any future cancellations in April, May or June will be added to the end of the school year.

Update on Lunch in the Dining Hall

We have successfully made the transition back to eating lunch at the cafeteria tables in the dining hall.  The students are enjoying eating with their classmates and are adjusting nicely to our dining hall routines and expectations.  As the weather gets nicer, students in grades 1-5 will have the option of eating at the tables in the dining hall or eating just outside at the picnic tables.

Elementary Literacy Update

Elementary teachers have continued to use professional development time this winter to deepen their understanding of reading instruction. Teachers and administrators have felt that a consistent scope and sequence to follow has been missing, and in response to this, we applied for the Accelerating Literacy Grant from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in early January. The purpose of this competitive grant is to bring high-quality core instructional materials needed to accelerate literacy learning into schools. Last week, our district was awarded funding up to $159,260 to purchase literacy core instructional materials for grades K-5. Using the parameters of the grant, our curriculum team narrowed down the options to two programs which we are looking at closely this month. Over twenty teachers have volunteered to pilot our choices of materials, participate in training for the programs, and rate the programs in order to determine which materials will best fit our needs.

Food Services - Universal Free Meals Update:

Earlier this month, Congress passed an appropriations package that did not include language allowing the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to extend current child nutrition waivers past June 30th. As a result, schools in Massachusetts and across the country will no longer be able to provide universal free meals through the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) effective at the start of the next school year (SY 2022-2023).

Households will have to re-adjust to meal charges after such a long time not having to worry about it. Lunch prices are still TBD but will most likely resemble closely what has been charged in the past. It is important parents and guardians make sure they create and/or have access to their student’s MySchoolBucks prior to the next school year. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Wendy Ng, Director of Nutrition Services at w.ng@hwschools.net or 978-468-0306.

SEPAC/District Parent Orientation Announcement

The Special Education Parent Advisory Council, in collaboration with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, will be hosting a parent orientation to learn about the upcoming Special Education and Civil Rights review in our district. The parent orientation will be held virtually via Zoom at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, March 29, 2022. Please join us!

Join Zoom Meeting: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82752055864?pwd=K2JtWDZ3dDFXczhLeDN3cXBKTWd6QT09

CORI Reminder

As we continue to move towards more normal operations, there will be opportunities for parents to be involved at our schools. We require any volunteers to have a CORI check and be fingerprinted. If you have already been CORI checked and fingerprinted, there are limitations. Fingerprints are good for 7 years and CORIs have to be redone every 3 years. If you need to update either, please don’t wait until the last minute as there is often a delay in getting approvals. Contact Janell Powers with questions.

MRMS Play - This is a Test

Miles River Middle School is excited to present ‘This is a Test’ by Stephen Gregg on:

Wonderful News from the Music Department

It is with great pleasure that we announce the return of Band and Chorus at the Elementary Level for 4th and 5th Grade students. Details about time, place and sign-up will be coming home in your children's backpacks. All students are eligible.

Title One Math teachers on Board!

We welcome with great enthusiasm our two new Title One Math Tutors, Megan Swaim and Holly Regan. Both Megan and Holly have already started to work with Cutler students and we are glad to have them as part of the Cutler team!

Mask Optional Policy:

As you know, on March 4th, each teacher held a class meeting to discuss and prepare for the new mask optional policy.  Cutler School continues to be a kind, caring, and respectful community.  Our goal is to make sure that everyone feels supported with their individual choices around mask-wearing.  Please reach out to your child's classroom teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

A request for the Playgrounds

Please would you be kind enough to check your kitchen supplies for old pots and pans and various other non-sharp kitchen items that may have seen better days? We always appreciate donations of this kind which make for great play tools in the sandpits for the younger children. All donations can be delivered to Janie Bellenis in the Cutler Office.

Health Office News

Please note that the state-mandated Fifth Grade postural screening will take place during PE

next week. If you have any questions please contact Lynne Nardella at 978 626 8545.

Update on Cafeteria Policies:

Now that the mask mandate has been lifted, we are beginning to plan a return to our usual round table layout for lunch in the Cafeteria. Over the next week or two, we will be moving the round tables back into the room and meeting with students about expectations for behavior during lunch. If you have any questions or concerns about this plan, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher. As the weather improves, outside spaces will also be available for children for lunch.

Lost and Found

The Lost and Found area in the Cafeteria is once again becoming overloaded with items ranging from coats and hats to water bottles and lunch boxes. Please feel free to visit Cutler Cafeteria to have a look should your child be missing any belongings.

Attention Parent Volunteers:

Now that COVID restrictions are slowly being lifted, Cutler students will once again be able to take advantage of the much-anticipated field trip schedule we have had in place in the past. We can seldom undertake field trips without parents and caregivers giving us support and volunteering to chaperone. In order to accompany a class on a field trip, chaperones need to be CORI-checked as well as fingerprinted. If you think you would like to chaperone Cutler field trips, please register online for an appointment to have fingerprints taken at: http//www.identogo.com/FP/Massachusetts.aspx. Please note that when you are given a choice of agencies/sectors, you must choose PreK - 12 Grade Education. When you are asked to supply a "Provider ID" please use the following code for the Hamilton-Wenham School District: 06750000. All further questions should be addressed to Janell Powers in Central Office at j.powers@hwschools.net.

Exciting News from MSBA:

We have been officially invited by the Massachusetts School Building Administration (MSBA) into the 270 day eligibility period for the Cutler School Building Project. As you may know, the Statement of Interest submitted last year by the district was to examine the possibility of combining the Cutler and Winthrop Schools into one.

This is not a guarantee of a project, only the first step of many to come. The eligibility period is 270 days and is an opportunity for the district and the MSBA to:

  1. Determine if the district is ready to manage and fund a major capital project

  2. Determine the district’s financial readiness

  3. Determine the community readiness

  4. Provide a schedule of events throughout the 270 days

  5. Identify needs for planning and budgeting

Please know that a building project like this has an extensive overall timeline. It could be up to 4-5 years before a shovel is put into the ground. We are excited about the project and confident that this project will be a way for our communities to come together positively for the benefit of our students and educators. If you would like to learn more you can check out the MSBA website.

Class of 2024 Fundraiser

The Hamilton Wenham class of 2024 is having an HW Generals sweatpants fundraiser to raise money for their class. Youth and adult sizes are available, and the sweatpants are NOT class-specific. They can be purchased using this google form. We appreciate your support!

Dismissal & Absences:

Please be mindful that dismissal can be an extremely busy time in the Cutler parking lot. Our mission is to make sure that your children are loaded into their cars safely. Sometimes this can take a little time. At the moment we have ONE moving pick-up line, alongside the playground,  in operation. Cutler staff members load four cars, and then, once filled, release them to load the next four cars. We would be most grateful if you would plan your pick up in good time so that we can avoid parents and caregivers parking on Asbury Street or the parking lot parallel to Asbury Street and walking over to collect their children, as well as cars pulling out and around stationary cars that we are still loading.

We would like to remind you that, should your child be absent for any reason, it would be most helpful if you would email the following three people: our nurse, Lynne Nardella, at l.nardella@hwschools.net, Janie Bellenis, School Secretary, at j.bellenis@hwschools.net, and your child's classroom teacher. Using this system will let everyone know at the same time and ensure that everyone is fully informed.

News about Kindergarten Registration

If you have an incoming Kindergarten student, please be sure to register ASAP! Registration is open from March 14-19, 2022 at the Central Office. Click here to view more detailed information.  Current Winthrop PreK students do not need to reregister, but please email Jen Caufield at j.caufield@hwschools.net indicating your intention to have your child attend HW Kindergarten next year.

News about Social and Emotional Support in our School

We have received a number of inquiries about what social-emotional support is available for our students. With the help of our student support staff, we have outlined information below:

Social/Emotional Learning Curriculum (SEL) continues to be investigated for use in all three elementary schools. School counselors continue to update their current curriculum, Respect and Responsibility, which is used by counselors in the classrooms. Additional curricula used in the classroom by counselors includes, The Social Thinking Curriculum: used in grades K- 2, and the Compassion Project. Bounce Back is a trauma-focused curriculum used in group lessons.

This year, through the ESSR grant, a school counselor was added at the elementary level. This counselor is assigned to Winthrop School but can be utilized across the elementary schools if needed.

An ongoing discussion of student needs and services happens weekly with counselors and principals. Elementary counselors also meet weekly with the middle school social worker and Director of School Counseling.

News about Food Assistance:

With the price of heating skyrocketing, many people may be struggling to put food on the table this winter. Acord Food Pantry can offer more than just weekly food distribution to local families. If you or someone you know), are struggling this winter, Acord can provide confidential emergency assistance to anyone in need without requiring personal information. This food assistance includes fresh dairy products, eggs, meat, fish, fresh produce, and shelf-stable items such as pasta, rice, cereal, and more.
