Dates to Remember

March 13                                              Teachers' Workshop; No school for students

From the Principal

Dear Cutler Families,

The Thursday morning before vacation our 5th grade students performed Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech,  “I Have a Dream”. At the end of their performance, they sang “We Shall Overcome.” I am not sure there was a dry eye in the audience. I was so incredibly impressed with how our students performed these words, and really understood the meaning behind them. Our 5th grade teachers did an incredible job preparing them for this. We were able to perform first in front of all of our students, and then for parents, caretakers and guests. It was moving.

We have continued our composting program. If anyone could use untouched apples or carrots, I would love to be able to repurpose some of these for horses, chickens or other animals. Once a child takes a bite out of the fruit, it goes directly into the compost.  However, because students are required to take a fruit or vegetable as part of our lunch program, we have many that go untouched! Please reach out to me directly should you want a bucket of apples and carrots weekly.

Please keep your eye on the weather this evening as snow is in the forecast for tonight, as well as for Friday.

Wishing you all a nice week!

Juliana

March 13                                              Teachers' Workshop; No school for students

From the Principal

Dear Cutler Families,

This week we launched our composting program within the Cutler cafeteria. Jane Roundy, former Cutler teacher, has been working with our 5th graders to teach them about the differences between recyclables, organic materials and trash. They then went into all of the classrooms in the school to teach our students the information they had learned, as well as showing them how we would be sorting our waste. We launched this effort in our cafeteria this past Monday and it has been hugely successful. We are grateful to so many people who have helped get these efforts off the ground including our cafeteria workers, our custodial staff, Jane Roundy, our 5th grade teachers and our Teaching Assistants who help in the cafeteria each day.

On Monday we were able to bring a large amount of food to the Acord Food Pantry. I want to thank everyone who contributed!

This week on Friday is Random Act of Kindness day. Teachers are talking about this with students at Morning Meetings. It would be wonderful to carry this over within families, and if you would like to write about a random act of kindness that you have witnessed within your family, you’re welcome to send it in on an index card with your student. There is a big bulletin board outside of the office where we are collecting these and we would love to share yours!

I wish you all a safe and happy February vacation.

Warmly,

Juliana

Cultural Enrichment:

Over the next four weeks, Cutler third and fourth graders will be participating in the Patton Homestead-based Lark STEAM program.* Through this exciting program, students will grow their understanding of local and international habitats (specifically those of the heron and the crane) through pixel art, coding, and 3D design. Partners from the Ipswich River Watershed Association and the Japanese Paper Theater Company will further enrich the artistic and cultural aspects of this study of our local habitats.

* This program is supported in part by a grant from the Hamilton-Wenham Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

From the Principal

Dear Cutler Families,

Last week’s Global Play Day was a true success! Students were busy with blocks, board games, beads, and everything else you could imagine. I was struck by how kids connected with new peers, children played across grade levels, and how there was almost no conflict. It was refreshing to see kids engage in play that went uninterrupted. There was even a Monopoly game going in 4th grade that lasted a good portion of the morning. Two kindergarteners delivered this note:

Teachers are eager to incorporate more opportunities like this in the working of our school year, and I look forward to keeping this spirit alive!

“Play is the work of childhood.”Jean Piaget

In other news our 5th grade is working with Jane Roundy, a former Cutler teacher and they are learning all about composting. This week Mrs. Roundy visited our 5th grade classrooms and brought the trash from our lunches. We sorted the trash and learned that half of the weight of our trash is in uneaten, untouched food. This included unopened goldfish packages, granola bars and untouched apples. We will move forward thinking through how to sort our food waste in order to be more mindful, as well as thinking about other ways to sort our waste. Please stay tuned for more information on our evolving composting work.

Thank you for your continued support, and for supporting our learning in so many ways.

Have a wonderful week.

Juliana
