A message from Mrs. Leary's Kindergarten classroom
December is mitten month in Mrs. Leary’s kindergarten. They are warming hands and hearts over the holidays. With colder weather and the holidays upon us we are collecting mittens to distribute to children north of Boston through our partnership with Department of Children and Families.  Drop your mittens in the collection box in the Gallery.  We are warming tender little hearts all over the North Shore two hands at a time… thank you in advance for your donation.  Joanne

Greetings from the Learning Commons!
We will be starting the Massachusetts Children’s Book Awards Book Club in December. Fourth and fifth grade students will be invited to read a minimum of five of the 25 nominated books. Then, we will meet at two lunch groups in the Gallery, where we will talk about the books we have read. In March, students will be voting for their favorite books. Then, the winning book will be announced in April. in previous years, Fourth and Fifth graders loved being part of this wonderful book club and contest.

Also, if your child is in fourth or fifth grade, please remember to order Scholastic Books from the link below. They make great holiday gifts. Plus, the Learning Commons earns points toward free books. If you order, use the library class code to be sure points go to the Learning Commons. In the October order, I was able to order two book series sets, plus some other popular books. If we earn enough points, we will be able to order multiple copies of some of the MCPA books for the book club. Also, students are making lists of the books they feel we need to purchase. I use those lists when ordering Scholastic Books. I want to be sure everyone has books that they love to check out, here in the Library.

Class Code: JC38P

We’ve been busy in the Learning Commons. This month in the Learning Commons, K-2 students have been learning how to use Book Creator. They have been having so much fun creating books of their own and learning to take risks and make mistakes. Students in 3-5 have been learning how to use Google Slides. Each grade is using Slides in a different way. Third grade is creating presentations, fourth grade is creating animations, and fifth grade is using Slides to create virtual field trips. Many of their projects will be shared in the Cutler Blog in December.

In December, students will start learning about code. They will be using block-based computer languages, such as Blockly and Scratch. Block-based computer languages turn code into colorful blocks. If they want a character or figure to move forward, they choose the forward block. If they want their character to repeat a movement, they can use a loop block. Kids love coding this way, and it prepares them for text-based computer languages.

Please take the time on Sunday nights to remind your student to put his/her library books in their backpack. Many elementary students still need parent coaching on how to care for and return library books.  If you just make it a routine on Sunday nights to put library books back in your child’s backpack, they will remember the routine and eventually start putting them there on their own. Thanks for your help.
