Early Release
Students will be dismissed at 11:15am this Friday for Winter Holiday Recess. No lunch will be served. School will reopen on January 2!

Chorus Concert
Our fourth and fifth grade Elementary Chorus and Ensemble are performing tonight at 6:30pm in the Buker School Gym. All are welcome!

Community Groups
Each year, we set aside four or five mornings to bring together our entire school to share our writing and complete community service projects. This Wednesday, December 20, our students will gather for our first community group meeting this school year. We have organized over 30 groups of students, with kindergarteners through fifth graders, matched with staff members that will meet throughout the school for about an hour on Wednesday morning. This has grown into one of our favorite school traditions, as we witness the kindergarten students sharing their first works at this time of year, most likely heavy on the illustrations and light on the written text. Older students are overwhelmingly encouraging and complimentary of these youngest writers, asking them about the important details in their drawings. Confident fifth graders will share pieces that leave the younger students in awe with their humor and descriptions. When these groups meet again at the end of the year, we are always amazed at the growth of all the students, especially the youngest ones who rapidly grow their writing skills through the spring. This time is an important way to honor the writing workshop work that students and teachers have been focusing on since the fall. Conferencing with teachers leads to rich discussions about word choice, descriptions, topic development, and voice that are reflected in the conversations that students have with each other. Be sure to ask your child about it on Wednesday!

Safe Arrival Notification
With the upcoming holidays, a reminder that if you are aware of your student’s planned absence and notifying teachers, please also inform the nurse via the safe arrival line (978)468-8472.  The nurse is responsible for attendance and absence investigation.  Ensuring the nurse is informed of planned (and unplanned) absences will prevent any calls home to you to check on the safety of your student. Thank you for your help with this!

Spirit Day: Our next school spirit day will be the last day of school, Friday, December 22nd!  What better a day, then a day for PJs?  Students may come to school in their jammies - holiday PJ's are of course encouraged!

Teacher/Staff Cookie Swap:  Each year the Friends of Cutler and volunteers bake a plethora of cookies for the teachers and staff to “swap” in the teacher’s lounge before the holiday break.  This year the swap will be held on Thursday 12/21.   We hope that you consider baking (or buying) for this fun and giving holiday event.  Click here to sign up:

Apparel:  The Winter Spirit Wear Order has been placed and items will be delivered in backpacks on December 20th unless you indicated you are going to pick up in order to keep gifts a secret.  If you missed the order, but are still looking for spirit wear – contact Sarah Olson atsarahpageolson@gmail.com or (978) 394-7673 for availability of limited back-stock items.  Thank you so much for your support!

Free Money:  Be on the look out for a new collection sheet for Box Tops that will be coming home in backpacks this week!  This is a super fun way to include the kids in the prep and counting of box tops throughout the winter.  We will of course still accept them in any form (baggies) but this new organizational method should be engaging and fun!

Cutler will again be taking part in Modell’s Holiday Team Week Program.  Cutler will receive 5% back on all purchases made between 11/24 – 12/21 with the coupon that can be found attached to the bottom of this document and on the Friends website and Facebook page.  Happy Shopping!

Also, remember to use the Amazon Link on the bottom of the Friends of Cutler website when shopping through Amazon this holiday season.  It’s one extra click, but it is a super easy way to help contribute to our school.

Book Fair & Coin Drive: Last year was Cutler’s 1st Scholastic Book Fair and it was tremendous fun and a huge success.  This year’s fair will be held the week of January 29th- February 2nd.  In keeping with last year’s success, we will begin with The Coin Drive.  So start saving/collecting your spare change!  The Coin Drive will be here in the New Year: the week of January 8th – 12th.

HW Edfund Grant awarded to HW Elementary Schools
We would like to thank the Hamilton Wenham Edfund as well as the many donors that make contributions in support of the Edfund. This fall, Heidi Hebert worked with the library media specialists at the other elementary schools to create a proposal and present a request for the support of Pop-Up Maker-Spaces. The grant for the three schools totaling $32,356.99 will provide two mobile carts and materials for each school to share K-2 and 3-5 learning opportunities that infuse science, technology, engineering, art and math into the classrooms. More details to come soon as we acquire the materials!

Report Cards
Students in grades 1-5 had their first trimester report card released into the Aspen family portal on Friday, December 8. Please email aspenhelp@hwschools.net if you had any trouble getting into the portal. Thank you!

A message from Mrs. Leary's Kindergarten class
December is mitten month in kindergarten, warming hands and hearts over the holidays. With colder weather and the holidays upon us, Mrs. Leary's class is collecting mittens to distribute to children north of Boston through our partnership with Lahey Health, In Home Therapy Services.  Please consider donating a pair of unused mittens to warm the hearts and hands of needy children here in Essex County. Mittens may be left at our Giving Tree in the Gallery. Thank you in advance for your donation!

Report Cards
Students in grades 1-5 will have their first trimester report card released into the Aspen family portal on Friday, December 8. We value report cards as one of our important ways to communicate progress with families.  The students' performance connected to a specific learning standard is evaluated on an academic performance indicator scale, ranging from N (student is not yet demonstrating progress toward the standard), B (student is beginning to progress toward standard), P (student is progressing toward consistent and independent proficiency of the standard) and M (student consistently and independently demonstrates mastery of the standard)

Each child will receive evaluative marks from their classroom teacher in social skills, language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.  Teachers will continue to comment on students' progress in social areas as well as the academic areas in this text box each term.  In addition, specialist teachers will provide marks and comments in each of their respective disciplines. As has been our practice in years past, Kindergarten students will receive their first report cards in at the mid-year mark.

As the holiday season is approaching, we want to notify families of the Hamilton-Wenham Holiday Assistance Fund.  This confidential program is coordinated by a dedicated community volunteer and is supported by the generous donations of many community members.  The Holiday Assistance Fund has been established to assist Hamilton and Wenham residents and their families who have experienced hardship due to unemployment, illness of a parent or some other unusual circumstance.  Due to limited funds, it is not intended to be a long term assistance program or for families to use repeatedly unless there are extenuating circumstances.  If your family meets the criteria stated above and you would like to request assistance, please contact Dolly McIlvaine, School Counselor,  as soon as possible to discuss this program and eligibility in further detail.  Dolly can be reached at 978-468-8475 or via email at d.mcilvaine@hwschools.net.   Assistance will be in the form of gift cards for winter clothing and/or food or in some instances, gifts of essential clothing such as winter coats, hats, pajamas, socks etc.  Requests for assistance should be made before November 9thth.
If you are interested in making a monetary donation to the program, you may also contact the Dolly McIlvaine for details.
